Michael V. Pack, Ph.D.

Senior Attorney

Michael Pack, Ph.D. helps innovators and organizations secure intellectual property that powers tomorrow’s breakthroughs. With a deep grounding in physics and electrical engineering, he brings precision and clarity to drafting and prosecuting patents in highly technical fields. Michael frequently advises clients on patent protection strategies in areas including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cybersecurity, wireless communications, and medical imaging.

Michael is especially adept at navigating shifting legal landscapes—whether it’s addressing §101 eligibility considerations, enablement challenges for AI, or constructing worldwide prosecution strategies. His work spans from initial invention disclosure to claim construction, drafting robust specifications, and guiding patents through to issuance.

Michael takes pride in crafting patent portfolios that support innovation commercialization while safeguarding foundational technologies. His practice includes preparing patents for AI-driven systems and designing comprehensive protection plans in healthcare imaging and other emerging domains.

Michael has participated as litigation support in various intellectual property disputes and proceedings, including inter partes reviews, district court litigation, and administrative challenges. His work in these matters emphasizes claim construction, developing infringement and invalidity contentions, and motion practice. Whether challenging or defending patent rights, he strategizes to align technical insights with legal arguments to produce robust, well-supported positions.

Patent Portfolio Development for a Medical Imaging Company

Lead the development and expansion of patent portfolios covering cutting-edge medical imaging technologies—including PET, CT, MRI, and ultrasound—through strategically crafted patent disclosures and claims that protect both system-level innovations and core imaging modalities.

Artificial Intelligence Patent Portfolio Development

Drafting and prosecuting foundational patents in artificial intelligence and machine learning, covering a wide range of use cases, including innovations in API technologies and user interfaces. In addition to UI-related and use-case‐oriented inventions, Michael has developed IP in improvements to foundational model architectures—such as chain-of-thought reasoning, training and fine-tuning methods, and enhancements to diffusion models. On the hardware side, he has crafted patent applications for AI accelerators optimized for multi-head attention processing, and devised improvements in datacenter thermal management, including advanced cooling, airflow control, and sensor-based thermal regulation for high-performance computing systems.

Quantum Computing Patent Portfolio Development

Drafted patents for topological quantum computing technologies, spanning hardware components, algorithmic methods, and error-correction techniques, with an eye toward both technical defensibility and long-term strategic value. Michael’s work also extends into quantum communications, including quantum key distribution protocols and secure quantum channel implementations.

Network Communications and Security Patent Portfolio Development

Developing and prosecuting patent applications in network and cybersecurity technologies—spanning Wi-Fi, LTE, and 5G systems as well as edge-deployed programmable data planes. This includes innovations involving routing and time-measurement protocols, novel packet header definitions, and encryption protocols for secure, efficient data flow. It further extends to programmable kernel-level observability and enforcement systems using eBPF, accelerators built into DPUs for offloading network functions, and API/UI technologies for monitoring, control, and orchestration of networked and compute-heavy systems.

Cloud-based Storage and Collaboration Patent Portfolio Development

Developing and prosecuting patent applications for cloud collaboration and media review systems, including inventions in advanced storage and synchronization protocols based on NVMe standards, metadata and versioning workflows, real-time review interfaces with playback synchronization, comments and annotations tied to media frames, and API/UI tools for content navigation and collaborative feedback.
